Description
17 fashion coversHarper's Bazar
1869 - 1887
This is a neat collection of front cover pages from the women's fashion paper,
Harper's Bazar,
all published between 1869 and 1887.
They are all at least 130 years old
. (
Harper's Bazar
later evolved into a magazine format with the spelling of its title changed to
Harper's Bazaar
.)
They all measure approximately 11x15.5 inches in size. One is in lousy condition, with tape repairs to its back, but the others are in generally very good and attractive condition, with some light age browning, and a couple having faint dampstains.
All of them are shown in the accompanying photos, to give you a complete look at their appearance.
They all feature wood-engraved illustrations of the fancy women's dresses of the late 1800s, showing them in full-length drawings. Some have brief texts on the page, describing the finery which is depicted. Many of them are described as "toilettes," an old-fashioned term used then to mean “a gown or costume.”
These are many of the caption titles for the fashions which are shown:
“Tailor Dresses,” “Surah Satin Cloak,” “Visiting Toilette,” “Nun's Veiling and Oriental Cashmere Dress,” “Reception and Visiting Toilettes,” “Visiting and House Toilettes,” “Ascot Toilettes,” “House Costumes,” “Promenade Dresses,” “Cashmere Shawl Draped as a Mantilla,” “Evening Toilettes,” “Coat-Tail Basque, Double-Apron Over-Skirt, and Round Skirt,” “Foulard Dress,” “Dress for Child Under One Year,” “Faille Walking Suit,” “Fur-Trimmed Evening Cloak,” and “Crepe Lisse Evening Dress.”
